The coach handles the Akamas road, the boat handles the lagoon. Longest time in the water of the three, and the slide off the back stays open while you are anchored.
Out of Latsi, under the cliffs
Leaves from the harbour nearest the lagoon, so less of the day is transit. Passes the Baths of Aphrodite and the cliffs at Fontana Amorosa on the way in.

The Akamas track is not a road.
Past Coral Bay the surface gives up and the peninsula turns into rock, ruts and switchbacks. That is the point: the gorge, Lara Bay and the far coast are only reachable in something with clearance, and the driver has done it a thousand times.

Three things the island does not export.
Beach days and boat trips are everywhere in the Mediterranean. Nesting loggerheads, a wine older than the language on the label, and a lace stitch with its own UNESCO listing belong to Cyprus.
The Nesting Beaches
Loggerhead and green turtles have nested on the Akamas sand for longer than anyone has been counting, and Lara Bay has been a protected rookery since 1978. Through the summer the beach itself is off limits to vehicles and the hatchlings are left alone, so the boats work the water instead — Turtle Cove on the east coast is the reliable one, and the crews know which mornings are worth the early start.

The Commandaria Road
The sweet wine made on the south slopes of the Troodos has a documented name older than most European countries, pressed in a handful of villages that still do it the same way — grapes dried in the sun before they ever see a barrel. Omodos and the villages around it pour it alongside the dry reds nobody outside Cyprus has heard of, and the tastings run all year, not just in season.

The Lefkara Lace
Lefkaritika — the drawn-thread embroidery worked in the doorways of Lefkara — went onto the UNESCO intangible heritage list in 2009, and the village is still full of women doing it by hand in the shade. The silver workshops share the same lanes. It is a slow, quiet, blue-shuttered place with a serious craft in it, half an hour off the Nicosia motorway.

When the Cyprus midday hits 38, go up or go under.
July and August inland are genuinely fierce, and a midday walk round a ruin is a bad plan. The island has three good answers: gain altitude in the Troodos where the cedar keeps it ten degrees cooler, get in the water on a dive or a lagoon boat, or take the cool of a monastery courtyard and a long lunch. All of them run right through the heat.
